Panorama Photos of Malibu on the iPhone 5

Panorama Photos on The iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S

Malibu is one of the best places in the world to view and photograph scenic panoramas that are simply stunning. A Google search reveals the fantastic depth of interest in not only taking photographs of the 27 Miles of Scenic Beauty of the Malibu coastline, but in creating a wealth of artistic impressions.

Panorama of the Malibu Beach Inn and Malibu Pier

One new tool in the quest to create amazing digital images is the Panorama mode in the new iPhone 5 Camera app.

Granted, there have been previously available tools to “stitch” together digital images into an expansively wide panorama, including existing apps on multiple smartphone platforms that do just that. What’s new is the ease with which the iPhone 5 can create one of these high quality, high resolution images.

The launch of the iPhone 5 brings with it a Panorama “mode” that reviewers have described with over the top adjectives like incredible, great, and even stunning.

The fact that even the iPhone 4S can create equivalent images using the current software update (iOS 6) is a bonus, especially for those iPhone 4S owners who are going to wait for their contract expiration before upgrading to a new iPhone.

First Point: Panorama photos in Malibu

Panorama image of the Malibu Pier and Malibu Point with a small wave

My first inclination was to head down to the Malibu Pier and see what I could create in an afternoon without venturing too far into the water, maybe just up to my knees. Of course my second inclination is to shoot the coastline from a boat or from the air, but that impulse may have to wait.

This 200+ degree panorama is 10,800 x 2,420 pixels in its original resolution

Having seen some of my examples, I’m sure you will want to try your hand at creating a “Panorama” of your favorite Malibu location.

Second Point: Using the Panorama feature

Here’s how to create a panorama on either the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S:

Using the iPhone “Camera” app, select the “Options” button at the top. If you own the iPhone 4S, you will have to upgrade to the newest version of iOS 6, if you haven’t already.

Then, tap the “Panorama” button, and you will see a rectangular target area with an arrow centered on a guiding line. The recording of the panorama may proceed from left to right, or from right to left by tapping the opposite side of the rectangular area.

Start the recording sweep by tapping the camera icon which is usually used to take a single photo. As you move the iPhone across your subject matter, a series of images will be captured and then stitched together to create a single “long” panorama.

It is worth noting that Apple documentation states that a panorama shot can capture about 240 degrees maximum. In addition, I found that two types of source selections may be captured: one is a pivot approach using a semicircle, and the other an elongated flatter horizontal image.

Using the Panorama mode, a wide angle image can be easily created. One example is a long line of people, as demonstrated by Apple’s video advertisement of kids saying “cheeeeeese”.

It helps to have a steady hand to keep the arrow aligned during slow movement across the target area, but some panorama images may show dark incomplete edges.

In shooting a wide panorama, I found that I needed to be prepared to smoothly pivot to maintain a level horizontal alignment. Some of my panorama photos had small dark edges, which can be cropped in edit mode right on the iPhone, or in most photo editors.

Third Point: Shared Photo Streams

Sharing your panoramas or other images with Shared Photo Streams

The panorama image may be edited like any other photo in the camera roll, or transferred to a PC, Mac, or a photo sharing service, but one new option is to create a “Shared Photo Stream” in the iCloud.

The last major update for the iPhone introduced a Photo Stream. This newest version of iOS 6 introduces the ability to create a new set of images called a “Shared” Photo Stream which can be shared with specific people or as a “Public” share.

While viewing a photo or multiple images, tap the “share” button, and then the “Photo Stream” button. From there, create a new photo stream or add your images to an existing shared photo stream.

Note that this new feature will work with photos, whether they are panorama images or standard photos, but just like the non-shared photo stream, videos are not included.

The “Shared Photo Stream” can be created with “public” or limited sharing, and has its own unique link. The newly created stream may be shared via Message, Email, Twitter, or Facebook. These photo streams are also available to view on the second and third generation of Apple TV.

Third Point: The iPhone 5 - Day 1

Day 1: Topanga Apple Store

"Oh No! I'll never get an iPhone 5 with these lines!"

September 22, 2012

News reports and images permeated the media this week, showing Apple customers queued up for at least four days in New York and a week early in London. What was the prize? The prize was to be one of the first to own an iPhone 5 on September 21, the first day.

Reports said that online orders sold out in an hour as delivery estimates were now revised.
"Oh no."

Updated reports read: "October delivery ..." of the iPhone 5.
"OH NO!"

Apple iPhone fans were left wondering, "Should I try to get the new smartphone on the first day, or (sad face) just wait?"

So, I told myself,  "I'll just check it out," and I signed up for a 15 minute session at the Apple store called the "Express" iPhone 5 workshop. That's perfect; at least I'll get to touch one.

So, I traversed Friday afternoon traffic, and soon arrived at my destination: the Topanga Apple store. I must have found the last remaining parking space as the entry sign changed to "Lot Full." I was doing my best Jason Alexander Frogger-like impression  as I walked through the busy parking lot toward the mall door.

When I got to the store, I saw through the windows (copyright, trademark, patent pending, SEO) that it was crowded with Apple fans. This is the Great Recession? There is no recession at Apple.

Upon arrival at the line in front of the store, I saw six, yes, only six, iPhone fans in the line for new iPhones. I heard a manager say:  "Where are the Academy seat-fillers, er, line-fillers, that we hired? This is unacceptable."

My first thought as a panicked iPhone fan: "Are you OUT of new iPhones?"

The blue shirt genius said something quick like, "No - I'll be here all weekend, and at least until 8pm tonight with new iPhones." Haha: see urban texting dictionary for multiple translations.

First Point

I thought:  Meh..., (Boring - WSJ) maybe this iPhone 5 isn't that good after all if there are only six people in line.

Second Point

Nah. Apple's iCloud ecosystem rocks.

So... I made a brief phone call to my personal budget puppet master, and decided to take my place among the "Droids" in line for the next fix of Ketracel-white. Hmmm, maybe that should be among the Drones, not Droids.

I returned to the line, and now there were 20+ people in line. Whew, I feel better now. That's more like it.

The line moved quickly. In less than 20 minutes, a new pleasant smiling face arrived in a blue shirt and asked: "May I help the next person in line?" That sounds familiar somehow. I'll have a white iPhone, to go, no a black 32 GB iPhone. Yeah, no... yes, I'd like a black one, with the large screen

After returning from the timed vault full of gold and anodized aluminum in the back, still smiling, she handed me a shiny new iPhone 5.

All went smoothly, except: I know my family iTunes password because I buy things, but what was that new 23 character iCloud account password? I tried it four times . Darn it... That's not it. Oh, I got it now. Typo, typo... I need pointier fingers, with less skin gooo. I got it!

Third Point

That was easy. How long did it take? After all that : I got it, in 26 minutes. Yeah, no, I made that number up. No, I didn't time it, but that's about right.

Now, did I backup all that stuff? Oh no, where's my old iPhone 4? OK. I got it.

No! Wait! Where are the "Laser keyboard and halographic images" that Fox 5 News in New York promised?

Oh well. It's an iPhone 5. Thanks for listening. I feel much better.

Then I gave it away to its real owner, but I'll get to keep paying for it for the next two years, just as if it were my very own iPhone 5.

Third Point: The iPhone 5 Announcement

The iPhone 5 Announcement is Almost Here, Finally

Original Post Date: September 10, 2012

The iPhone 5 Announcement

There are only two events that have such a huge worldwide interest that they could possibly “break” the internet. One is Apple’s announcement of the new iPhone. The other was the London Olympics when the Guardian reported that the IOC asked people to only use Twitter for “urgent” messages. It turns out that some cyclists could not be located with the GPS internet tracking system due to a heavy load of personal multi-media messages.

Apple has reported that over 70 million iPhones were sold in the first half of 2012. Experts at Piper Jaffray are forecasting iPhone 5 unit sales of 10 million in the first week of availability. Many more over-the-air upgrades of previous iPhone models are expected when iOS 6 (the software upgrade) becomes available. You won’t catch me lined up outside an Apple store next to Apple founder Steve Wozniak who regularly does so, but I will be watching September 12 for the latest “breaking” news on the new iPhone 5.

The New iPhone 5:

About a year ago many of us fanned the flames of rumors, looking for a new iPhone called the iPhone 5 with a larger screen and more capability. We were disappointed to get the iPhone 4S, but many of us still bought one, including a local actor / director named Rob, and a local surf legend.

The big announcement last year was Siri. Whether you like Siri or think she (or he, with a British accent) was a disappointment, most of us see it as a step in the right direction in hands free communication or app control. But what do we expect in the next iPhone?

FIRST POINT

First Point: Better Phone Hardware

Many have expressed their wish lists, but these are, by consensus, the expected new features: a new faster brain (A6 CPU), a faster bigger (better) touch screen that measures at least 4 inches, a faster network called LTE so that information flows to the iPhone faster, "Wherever I May Roam" without WiFi. The new iPhone may have one more row of icons, a new dock connector, and display letterbox (theater style) video better.

iPhone 4S: Who wants a bigger screen?
One more row of icons would be nice.

Second Point: Software and New Apps included in iOS 6

New updates were made available to app developers months ago. These improvements will benefit existing and future iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners and are listed by Apple at their website, so these are not unknown in general terms.

The new main software features include: a new Maps "app" with turn by turn audio directions, a new FaceTime app that does not require WiFi (prices may vary by carrier), and an improved Siri for launching apps and hands free control so we can say: “Open Angry Birds” or send Twitter or Facebook messages without tapping. Facebook links will now be built in so that we all can share and be more social with just a few taps on our phone. There are also new Shared Photo Streams that are in the cloud but do not count against your iCloud storage allotment.

There will also be a new Passbook feature for online tickets and coupons, and improvements to the Phone app so that we can quickly send the call to voicemail, reply with a message, or set "Do Not Disturb" for anyone except maybe our manager. Safari, Mail, and Accessibility will include updates as well.

Third Point: Speculation - A 90 Foot Wave?

There may not be a 90 foot wave, and the iPhone 5 may not be an entirely revolutionary product, but it will generate much interest.

Steve Jobs ended many of his new product announcements with the line : "One more thing!" Last year the big new "one more" surprise feature was Siri. What will it be this year? Now it’s time for a wish list.

Aspects of the iPhone ecosystem that I enjoy include:

iTunes Match works everywhere, on Windows, Macs, iPhones and iPads, and already provides many convenient features for easily getting to “my” music.

AirPlay streams audio and video (in Full HD) and can be controlled with a Remote iPhone app, but

“One more thing” is that iTunes Match on the iPhone 5 may provide a much improved music and video streaming service. Rumors indicate that the new iPhone may have new music streaming to compete with Spotify and Pandora apps. I don't expect an iTunes Video Match service this year, but eventually Video Streams may work like Music or Photo Streams.
